john lautner‘s iconic 1961 wolff residence in los angeles is now for sale at an asking price of $ 6,500,000. one of the visionary american architect’s personal favorite five, the midcentury masterpiece was commissioned by marco wolff, an interior designer who asked for a building similar to frank lloyd wright ‘s fallingwater house. lautner, a taliesin fellow and former f.l.w. employee, designed the whole house as a waterfall step, which follows the hillside slope in a series of cascading rectangles.

listed by george salazar and tilsia acosta of berkshire hathaway homeservices california properties, lautner‘s wolff residence is designated a historical cultural monument by the cultural heritage commission, city of los angeles, as well as a california state monument. the house employees stone, glass, and copper, marking it one of the best representations of lautner’s midcentury masterpieces, and one of his ‘favorite five’ commissions. built as a series of juxtaposed rectangles cascading down the hillside lot and towards the swimming pool at the lower level, the house intermingles with the surrounding vegetation.

john lautner wrapped the living room, located on the top floor of the house, in two walls of glass, bringing in views of los angeles and beyond, while the master bedroom, underneath the living room, has its own terrace with panoramic views. the swimming pool at the lower level offers additional opportunities to enjoy the surrounding cityscape from a peaceful, secluded zone. the residence, which itself features one bedroom and 1.5 baths, shares a copper-lined roof with the adjoining guest house, commissioned in 1970, which has three rooms/bedrooms and two full baths.
